Modern Air-Conditioned Studio

When it comes to learning to dance, how we learn best is up to the individual. Some people learn best in group scenarios, others prefer the accelerated learning of private lessons and most of us don’t even know what our options are.

The first step towards learning to dance is to know what you’re looking for. Do want to attend classes on a regular weekly schedule or would you prefer more flexibility? Do you want to learn on your own, with a partner or as part of group? What kind of dancing do you want to learn? What do you want to spend and what do you consider a fair return for your money? All these questions need to be answered before you start looking at studios and classes so you can narrow down your options.

What do I Look for in a Studio?

The first thing to be aware of at any studio or class is what they are teaching. Some studios specialise in what dances they teach, commonly of the same music genre and whilst this gets you moving it can also limit what music you can dance to. For example, Dancecorp Brisbane offers up to 20 dances of various styles for our students to choose from according to their preference.

When you know what is being taught it’s then a case of HOW you’re taught. Group lessons are a lot of fun and a great way to meet people. However, if it’s your only method of learning you will learn at the groups pace, whether it is slower or faster than you. If you are attending regular classes you may find that you are repeating yourself each week for new beginners or you need to start at a certain date to fit the next schedule. Learning through Private lessons is self paced and the most effective. So while it may be more expensive, the value for money is far greater. Our experience shows that the best form of learning is a combination of group and private lessons.

How far away your place of learning is can also weigh heavily on your decision. Many studios are located centrally for best accessibility and some have multiple locations. Smaller or specialised studios are often in their local area and draw local crowds. That being said many people travel far and wide for a good nights dancing.

The amount that you spend on your dancing is completely up to you. Dancing is an investment in yourself. If you are willing to attend regularly, dance with various partners and practise where you can, your dancing will be priceless. Once again it all boils down to what YOU consider value for money. For example, how much depth would you expect if you were taught technique for $10? The amount people spend on their dancing is the greatest scale on earth. Pick a figure and no doubt someone, somewhere, has spent it on their dancing.

The most important factor when choosing a studio is finding the one that you feel comfortable in. Your learning will be much faster in a place you can relax, have a laugh and meet great people.
